Cape Verde Faces Crisis: State of Emergency Declared Following Devastating Floods
After torrential rains led to catastrophic flooding, Cape Verde's government has launched a state of emergency.
Cape Verde has declared a state of emergency on the islands of São Vicente and Santo Antão following a severe flooding crisis that claimed the lives of at least nine individuals and displaced approximately 1,500 residents. This emergency status enables the government to utilize crisis funds and expedite urgent repairs to the damaged infrastructure on these Atlantic islands. The floods, which occurred on Monday, were triggered by Tropical Storm Erin, resulting in a staggering 193mm (7.6 inches) of rain within just five hours, significantly surpassing São Vicente's average annual rainfall.
Deputy Prime Minister Olavo Correia described the situation as "catastrophic" to the BBC, while rescue teams have engaged in frantic searches for those still unaccounted for. The torrential rains have wreaked havoc on roads, homes, and vehicles. Ester Brito from the country’s meteorology institute remarked on the unusual weather patterns, noting they exceeded the 30-year climatological averages.
Interior Minister Paulo Rocha conveyed the harrowing experiences of the residents, stating that the night of flooding was filled with "panic and despair." Local community organizer Alveno Yali, who oversees efforts in the hardest-hit areas, recounted the overwhelming intensity of the rain and wind that led to alarming material destruction.
In response, the Cape Verdean diaspora, particularly from France, Luxembourg, Portugal, and the United States, has mobilized support through crowdfunding initiatives. Significant funds have been raised, directing assistance for essential items like food, water, hygiene products, and other emergency supplies. Andreia Levy, the president of Hello Cabo Verde in France, stated that the entire diaspora is united in delivering crucial aid directly to those affected.
