US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) shot and killed a man near Chicago on Friday after he allegedly drove his car at a group of agents.
A spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security reported that ICE had been trying to arrest the man, Silverio Villegas-Gonzales, but he resisted and drove towards the agents, dragging an officer along with his vehicle.
Fearing for his life, an ICE agent drew his weapon and fired, resulting in Villegas-Gonzales being pronounced dead shortly after at a local hospital.
During a vehicle stop, the suspect resisted and attempted to drive his vehicle into the arrest team, striking an officer and subsequently dragging him as he fled the scene, the statement added.
The injured agent is currently recovering in stable condition in the hospital after sustaining severe injuries.
The Department of Homeland Security disclosed that Villegas-Gonzales had a history of reckless driving and was an undocumented migrant who entered the United States at an unknown time.
Local police, who were not involved in the incident, stated their lack of involvement in the arrest attempt.
Illinois Governor JB Pritzker expressed the need for a thorough and transparent account of the events, reiterating that the residents of Illinois deserve clarity in situations involving law enforcement.
Franklin Park, where the incident occurred, is home to around 18,000 residents, with a significant Hispanic population, and has seen increased ICE activity in recent weeks due to orders from the Trump administration.
