The White House confirmed that President Trump has been diagnosed with chronic venous insufficiency, a common and generally benign condition affecting blood flow in the legs. While the diagnosis stems from observed swelling, doctors emphasize it poses no serious health threats.

Trump's Chronic Venous Insufficiency: Understanding the Diagnosis
President Trump's recent diagnosis of chronic venous insufficiency raises questions about his health as he experiences leg swelling.
The White House has disclosed that President Donald Trump, 79, has been diagnosed with chronic venous insufficiency, following concerns raised due to swelling in his legs. During a recent press briefing, Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt shared that Trump sought medical advice after noticing discomfort, leading to a diagnosis from the White House Medical Unit. Additionally, the president has faced scrutiny over visible bruising on the back of his hand, which the administration attributes to minor irritation from frequent handshakes, rather than a direct consequence of his vein condition.
Chronic venous insufficiency is characterized by the failure of leg veins to efficiently return blood to the heart, resulting in pooling in the lower limbs. As outlined by Captain Sean Barbabella, the White House physician, the condition is especially prevalent among older adults and is described as "benign and common." It is believed that around 10% to 35% of individuals over 70 may experience this ailment, which can be exacerbated by factors such as obesity, extended periods on one's feet, or a history of blood clots.
Despite the diagnosis, Dr. Barbabella reassured that there are no signs of deeper vein issues, such as deep vein thrombosis (DVT) or any major arterial disease, after a thorough examination of Trump. Normal cardiac structure and functioning were documented, and no symptoms of heart failure or systemic illness were found.
However, chronic venous insufficiency can result in discomfort, including heaviness in the legs, swelling, and potential cramping. To mitigate symptoms, doctors recommend measures such as wearing compression stockings and elevating the legs at night.
Previously, following his annual physical, Trump had been deemed in "excellent health," according to Dr. Barbabella, who noted his robust cardiovascular and pulmonary function. President Trump has consistently expressed confidence in his health, affirming he feels physically fit and satisfied with his overall well-being.
