A serious security breach has hit Tea, a women-only dating safety app, which recently boasted 1.6 million users. The application, designed for women to perform background checks on potential partners and report concerning behavior, has reported unauthorized access resulting in the exposure of 72,000 user images. Notably, some of these images were submitted for verification purposes, violating Tea's privacy assurances that such materials would be deleted post-authentication.

This breach has specifically affected users who joined prior to February 2024. In response, Tea has stated they are collaborating with leading cybersecurity experts to address the issue effectively. Despite its controversial features that let women report “red flag” behaviors about men while also highlighting “green flags,” the app has gained support amidst ongoing debates about its implications.

Tea, founded in November 2022 by Sean Cook, was conceived in light of personal experiences that heightened awareness around the vulnerability of women on dating platforms. Cook stated in a recent interview that the lack of security offered by traditional dating apps was alarming. However, the app's approach has faced criticism, with some claiming it could lead to invasions of privacy and defamation for men.

Furthermore, a recent admission from Tea clarified that an additional 59,000 images comprising posts, comments, and direct messages from users dating back two years were also accessed unlawfully. In light of these disclosures, the company emphasized its commitment to user safety and is actively taking steps to protect the community moving forward.
