Mother Faces Trial for Alleged Kidnapping of Six-Year-Old Daughter in South Africa
Kelly Smith, accused of orchestrating her daughter's disappearance, stands trial amid widespread concern.
Kelly Smith, the mother of six-year-old Joshlin who vanished over a year ago, is now on trial for allegedly orchestrating her daughter's kidnapping. Smith, along with her boyfriend Jacquen Appollis and their friend Steveno van Rhyn, was arrested following Joshlin’s mysterious disappearance from their home in Saldanha Bay, near Cape Town, in February last year. The case drew national attention and spurred an intense search, yet the child remains missing.
All three defendants have pleaded not guilty to charges of kidnapping and human trafficking. Initially, Smith claimed that she left her daughter in the care of Appollis when Joshlin went missing. However, prosecutors later alleged that Smith may have been involved in selling or conspiring to exchange her child and claimed she misled authorities about Joshlin's circumstances.
The case intensified when Lorentia Lombaard, a former co-accused with Smith, agreed to testify against her, prompting the focus to shift squarely onto Smith. The high-profile nature of the case even caught the attention of Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie, who offered a reward of one million Rand (approximately $54,000) for information leading to Joshlin’s safe return.
The trial is taking place from March 3 to March 28 at a multi-purpose center in Saldanha, which has been converted into a high court to facilitate community access to the proceedings. The judge emphasized the importance of community involvement throughout this lengthy trial process.
