Kenyan Lawmaker Gunned Down in Assassination Attempt in Nairobi

A shocking assassination of MP Charles Ong'ondo Were has sparked outrage in Kenya.

In a troubling escalation of political violence, Kenyan MP Charles Ong'ondo Were was shot dead in Nairobi, prompting calls for justice and investigations into the circumstances surrounding his murder. The MP's assassination is believed to have been a targeted attack, as details emerge about prior threats against his life.

Kenyan police were quick to respond, stating the attack was likely premeditated. On Wednesday, Were was ambushed while driving along a busy Ngong Road, with gunmen on a motorcycle pursuing him before one attacker shot him at close range. Despite the efforts of his driver and bodyguard to rush him to a local hospital, Were was pronounced dead upon arrival.

Fellow lawmakers and opposition leaders have expressed horror at the brazen act of violence. Parliament Speaker Moses Wetang'ula called Were a "fearless and distinguished" figure, while opposition leader Raila Odinga condemned the murder, emphasizing the need for accountability amidst rising political tensions in the country following the 2022 elections.

As investigations unfold, President William Ruto has ordered a thorough probe into the incident, vowing to bring those responsible to justice. The tragedy has underscored the urgent need for improved security measures for politicians in a country grappling with political unrest and violence.

This incident comes amidst heightened fears for political figures in Kenya and calls for more stringent enforcement of protective measures. The investigation continues as the Kenyan public demands answers and justice for the fallen MP.
