Florida Woman Arrested for Threatening Healthcare Company with Violent Rhetoric
A 42-year-old woman is charged after threatening a health insurance company during a phone call, invoking language from a recent murder case.
Briana Boston, a 42-year-old resident of Florida, has been charged with making violent threats against Blue Cross Blue Shield during a phone call regarding a denied medical claim. The incident took place shortly after the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, with Boston reportedly echoing phrases engraved on bullet casings found at the crime scene, including "Delay, deny, depose, you people are next."
Following the Tuesday phone call, which was recorded, local authorities in Lakeland swiftly acted on Boston's statements and arrested her at her home. She is charged with making threats to commit a mass shooting or act of terrorism, leading to a bond being set at $100,000 (£78,900) by a judge who cited the current social climate.
During the call, Boston expressed her frustration with healthcare companies, claiming they deserved "karma" for allegedly playing games with patients. She later clarified to police that she only used language associated with Thompson's murder because it was a focal point in the news cycle at the time.
The case took a more serious turn as details emerged about Thompson’s murder suspect, Luigi Mangione, whose arrest followed a multi-state manhunt. Authorities have since expressed concern over potential copycat threats targeting healthcare executives in the wake of this violent crime.
As Boston faced her charges in court, her attorney Jim Headley attempted to portray her as a responsible mother of three, arguing for her release without any prior criminal record. However, the judge emphasized the seriousness of her threats in light of the current state of affairs, leading to Boston’s stunned reaction upon hearing the bail decision.
This incident draws attention to the frustrations many encounter within the US healthcare system, which has been accused of high costs and denied claims, sparking discussions around corporate accountability and public safety concerns.
