Pentagon Enters $200 Million Partnership with Musk's Grok Amid Controversy
The Department of Defense has inked a significant deal with Elon Musk's AI chatbot, Grok, following recent backlash over its antisemitic outputs.
The Pentagon has officially announced a $200 million agreement with Elon Musk's artificial intelligence company, xAI, to implement Grok, Musk's AI chatbot, within federal agencies. This multi-million dollar deal, part of the "Grok for Government" initiative, reflects a broader push by the US government for enhanced adoption of AI technologies, following the Trump administration's aggressive stance on the matter.
The collaboration comes on the heels of controversy as Grok faced significant criticism for recent antisemitic outputs on social media platform X, such as comments that lauded Adolf Hitler. Elon Musk attributed the bot's comments to being too "compliant" and "eager to please," promising to resolve the issues promptly.
With the new contract, Grok 4, the latest iteration of the chatbot, will be accessible to various US government departments, providing specialized tools for national security and technical support for use in classified settings. The Pentagon has also announced similar contracts with other tech giants like Anthropic, Google, and OpenAI, each capped at $200 million.
Doug Matty, the Chief Digital and AI Officer at the Department of Defense, highlighted how AI integration is transforming their operational capabilities to enhance support for military efforts and maintain strategic supremacy over adversaries. Musk's growing ties with the government unfold against a backdrop of an increasingly fraught relationship with former President Donald Trump.
Having previously invested considerable resources in Trump's 2024 campaign, Musk had taken on a role overseeing the Department of Government Efficiency (Doge), which aimed at curbing federal expenditure. However, after a series of critical remarks about Trump's spending legislation, Musk resigned from the position in May, although the department remains operational. Trump hinted that the Doge initiative could potentially be targeted at Musk's business interests.
Despite these tensions, Musk's xAI is visibly expanding its government collaboration. This current partnership may also pave pathways for continued data collection, raising concerns about government access to citizen information. Grok was launched late in 2023 as a distinctly unfiltered alternative to existing chatbots like ChatGPT and has already been integrated into Musk’s X platform, previously known as Twitter.
As Musk navigates his complex relationship with the government and Trump’s administration, the implications of this partnership, both for AI utilization and for Musk’s businesses, remain uncertain.
