Pope Francis Faces Health Crisis Amid Ongoing Pneumonia Battle
Pope Francis, aged 88, experiences a serious health setback but remains optimistic, according to the Vatican.
Pope Francis, aged 88, has been hospitalized for two weeks due to pneumonia, but on Friday, he faced a serious complication, as confirmed by the Vatican. The Pope suffered a bronchial spasm that resulted in inhaling vomit, a health crisis that shifted the focus on his overall condition. The Vatican reassured the public that he was responding positively to treatment and remained conscious and alert throughout the incident.
Doctors indicated that it would take another 24 to 48 hours to ascertain if this crisis had exacerbated the Pope's health issues, as he continues to battle pneumonia in both lungs along with other infections. Previously, the Pope had overcome a respiratory scare last Saturday, leading to a generally optimistic outlook from medical staff.
The Vatican stated that this bronchial crisis was an isolated incident requiring "noninvasive mechanical ventilation," meaning that the Pope was not fully intubated. Currently, he is using a mask to assist with his breathing and is cooperating with medical procedures, remaining in good spirits.
Austen Ivereigh, the Pope's biographer, noted the incident as a setback but urged followers to maintain perspective, suggesting that the Pope's responsiveness should inspire hope. Other community members, including priests and public visitors, expressed their worries, acknowledging the gravity of his illness given his advanced age. “It’s a difficult situation; we must stay hopeful,” remarked Rosa Busà, a visitor from Rome, highlighting the deep affection many have for the Pontiff.
