TEL AVIV, Israel (AP) — A drone launched from Yemen by the Houthi militant group has struck Ramon International Airport in southern Israel, resulting in the closure of the airport's airspace and a suspension of flights, according to the Israeli military on Sunday.

Israel reported that multiple drones were launched, with some intercepted before entering Israeli airspace. The strike on the passenger hall at Ramon International Airport, located near Eilat, marks a significant escalation in ongoing hostilities.

One individual sustained light injuries from shrapnel during the incident, as revealed by Israel's rescue services, Magen David Adom. Nasruddin Amer, deputy head of the Houthi media office, celebrated the operation on social media, branding it a “unique, qualitative military operation.” He warned that Israeli airports are now targets for further attacks, urging foreigners to stay away for their safety.

This drone attack comes as Israel continues operations against Houthi targets in Yemen, following a recent Israeli strike that killed Houthi Prime Minister Ahmed al-Rahawi and other officials. The Houthis have vowed to increase their attacks on Israeli and shipping vessels transiting the region.

In addition to the drone strike, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared intentions to advance military operations in Gaza City, amid stalled negotiations with Hamas. Netanyahu claims that more than 100,000 Palestinians have evacuated Gaza City, though these figures are disputed by international entities.

Strikes targeting Gaza led to the reported deaths of at least 13 Palestinians, including several women and children, in retaliatory operations amidst heightened tensions and ongoing conflict.
