Meta's founder Mark Zuckerberg has officially announced an investment plan amounting to hundreds of billions of dollars to build expansive AI data centers in the United States. The project’s flagship facility, aptly named Prometheus, is scheduled to be operational by 2026 and will span an area comparable to Manhattan, covering roughly 59.1 square kilometers or 22.8 square miles.
Zuckerberg also revealed the development of additional data center clusters, including one called Hyperion, which is anticipated to reach a capacity of up to five gigawatts within a few years. “We are constructing multiple titan clusters as well. Just one of these will cover a significant portion of Manhattan's footprint,” he stated in a recent post on his social media platform, Threads.
Prometheus will be erected in New Albany, Ohio, and Hyperion will follow in Louisiana, aiming for completion by 2030. “We are committed to investing several hundred billion dollars... to create superintelligence,” Zuckerberg emphasized, referring to the naming of these facilities as reflective of their monumental scale and impact.
Industry analysts, including Cambrian AI Research principal analyst Karl Freund, pointed out that Zuckerberg’s strategy appears to be one of buying dominance in the artificial intelligence space.
