Peru's President Cleared of Impeachment Amid 'Rolexgate' Controversy
Dina Boluarte's impeachment fears subside as investigation into alleged luxury watch bribes is dismissed, but legal challenges remain.
In a significant development for Peru's political landscape, President Dina Boluarte has sidestepped potential impeachment following the dismissal of an investigation into allegations that she accepted Rolex watches as bribes. The congressional subcommittee’s ruling grants Boluarte temporary immunity from impeachment proceedings, even as her approval ratings hover in single digits.
The scandal, known as "Rolexgate," gained traction after reports spotlighted the luxury timepieces adorning Boluarte during public appearances. Police raided her residence in March 2024, searching for several watches that she purportedly failed to disclose. This action commenced after Boluarte's request for additional time to respond to a subpoena demanding evidence of purchase for the timepieces was denied by prosecutors. A raid was also executed at the government palace, which Boluarte’s administration later condemned as "disproportionate and unconstitutional."
Addressing the allegations, Boluarte has maintained her innocence, asserting that she began her political career "with clean hands" and pledging to leave office in the same manner. She claims that the watch in question is an old item acquired from her earnings since childhood.
In addition to the Rolexgate investigation, Boluarte faces scrutiny surrounding a two-week absence in 2023 due to an unannounced nose surgery during which she failed to delegate her responsibilities. Her ascent to the presidency came in the wake of former President Pedro Castillo’s impeachment, which was marked by intense protests and unrest resulting in numerous fatalities.
As Peru gears up for its next presidential and legislative elections slated for April 2026, the implications of these legal challenges continue to loom over Boluarte's administration.
