US President Donald Trump has said he will sue the New York Times for $15bn (£11bn) over what he refers to as defamation and libel.
The New York Times has been allowed to freely lie, smear, and defame me for far too long, and that stops, NOW! Trump posted on his social media platform, Truth Social, on Monday.
He singled out the Times' endorsement of Kamala Harris in the last presidential election in 2024, describing it as becoming a mouthpiece for the Radical Left Democrat Party.
Trump indicated that his lawsuit is being lodged in Florida, a Republican stronghold. The BBC has reached out to the newspaper for a comment.
Trump has consistently voiced his discontent regarding media coverage that he deems unfavorable to his presidency.
In a late Monday post, he criticized the Times for its endorsement of Harris, highlighting that it was prominently displayed on the front page—a move he claimed was actually put dead center... something heretofore UNHEARD OF!
Trump also accused other media outlets of smearing him through a highly sophisticated system of document and visual alteration.
This latest announcement comes after ABC News and Paramount's CBS News agreed to multimillion-dollar settlements to Trump in separate lawsuits in recent months. Additionally, he has filed a case against the Wall Street Journal related to its coverage of the Epstein scandal.
This isn’t Trump's first attempt to sue the New York Times. In 2023, a judge dismissed a previous lawsuit he filed against the paper, citing constitutional law issues. That $100m (£79m) lawsuit alleged a conspiracy involving his estranged niece, Mary Trump, to obtain his tax records, connected to a Pulitzer Prize-winning series on Trump's financial dealings.
Furthermore, Trump faced setbacks in his legal battles against CNN, where a federal judge dismissed a $475m (£369m) defamation claim where he alleged the network compared him to Adolf Hitler.
Clarification: This story has been updated to include the lawsuits against ABC News and Paramount, which ended with settlements in Trump’s favor.
