Zelensky Urges US to Strengthen Support for Ukraine Amid Tensions with Trump
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky calls for greater US commitment following contentious White House meeting.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has called on the United States to "stand more firmly on our side" amid escalating tensions following a heated exchange with President Donald Trump during a recent White House meeting. As he arrived in the UK for a European leaders' summit, Zelensky emphasized the importance of continued US support for Ukraine despite facing "the tough dialogue" between the two nations.
During the contentious meeting held in the Oval Office, Zelensky, Trump, and US Vice-President JD Vance interrupted each other, with Trump urging the Ukrainian leader to negotiate peace with Russia "or we are out," while Vance chastised him for perceived ingratitude towards US assistance. European leaders have shown solidarity with Zelensky, but NATO’s secretary general reminded him of the need to mend ties with Trump.
Landing in London, Zelensky took to social media to express his calls for US security guarantees in any "just and lasting" peace agreement with Russia. He acknowledged Trump's desire for an end to the war—now deep into its second year—but expressed that Ukraine's commitment to peace is resolute. The Oval Office meeting was originally arranged to finalize a deal granting the US access to Ukraine’s rare earth mineral resources but fell apart, leading to Zelensky being asked to leave prematurely.
Post-meeting, Trump criticized Zelensky for "overplaying his hand" and stressed that peace talks with the US would require the Ukrainian leader to express a genuine interest in peace. In a subsequent address, Zelensky reiterated that Ukraine is ready to finalize the minerals deal, framing it as a crucial first step towards obtaining security guarantees from the US. However, he cautioned that a ceasefire without such guarantees poses significant risks for Ukraine.
He called for a robust US stance against Russian aggression, acknowledging that while the US might seek dialogue with Russian President Vladimir Putin, it should also embrace the principle of "peace through strength," emphasizing joint actions against Russia's advances.
In Moscow, the Kremlin criticized Zelensky's Washington visit, dismissing it as a "complete diplomatic failure" and accusing him of being fixated on prolonging the conflict while asserting intentions to annex territories.
As diplomatic discussions continue in London, Zelensky has reinforced alliances with key European leaders, receiving messages of support from nations including Germany, France, and Spain. Notably, French President Emmanuel Macron reiterated the distinction between aggressors and victims in the war, while Germany's leaders declared unwavering support for Ukraine.
While the White House exchange has raised concerns about US-European relations, NATO chief Mark Rutte reminded that Trump's administration had previously facilitated military aid to Ukraine, allowing it to defend itself effectively against Russian incursions. As the war persists, recent reports of drone strikes in northeastern Ukraine highlight the ongoing humanitarian crisis, underscoring the urgent need for international diplomatic efforts.
