Heavy rainfall has brought parts of Bengaluru to a standstill, as the city, often dubbed 'India's Silicon Valley,' grapples with severe flooding. The downpour, which began on Sunday, resulted in more than 100mm of rain falling on Monday—the highest record since 2011. Local authorities are on alert for additional rain expected this Tuesday due to your cyclonic activity over the Andaman Sea. Tragically, three fatalities have been reported due to rain-related incidents, including a heartbreaking case of a 12-year-old boy.
Bengaluru hosts a multitude of global tech firms, many of which have advised their employees to work remotely in light of flooded streets and disrupted transport. Streets are heavily waterlogged, with footage showing commuters navigating knee-deep waters and vehicles stranded. The compound wall of the i-Zed software company collapsed, resulting in the death of a 35-year-old female employee.
Authorities are aware of the challenge and have identified 210 areas prone to flooding, striving to manage the crisis urgently. Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar reassured citizens by stating that there was no cause for panic. However, criticism has mounted against the Congress-led government from the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which accused local leaders of neglecting the city’s worsening rain-related infrastructure issues despite significant funding.
The government has asserted that the problems currently being faced are not new and have developed over numerous administrations. Shivakumar stated that the historical neglect of the issues requires long-term solutions rather than immediate fixes. Bengaluru has witnessed recurrent flooding in recent years, attributed to aggressive urbanization, including construction on vital water bodies. The situation has sparked outrage on social media, with residents expressing frustration over the city’s dilapidated infrastructure and ineffective responses to such disasters.
