Arrest in Shocking Rape and Burial Claims Erupts Tensions in Indian Temple Town

The arrest of a man alleging cover-ups of rape and murders in Dharmasthala has sparked intense scrutiny and political fallout in Karnataka.

A former temple cleaner has been arrested for perjury following his explosive claims of being forced to bury the remains of women raped and murdered near the prominent temple of Dharmasthala. The incident has prompted an extensive investigation and raised significant political and judicial implications in the region.

Police in the southern Indian town of Dharmasthala have arrested a man who made shocking allegations of being coerced into burying the bodies of women who he claimed were raped and murdered. The arrest has sent ripples through the small town, which is home to the revered temple of Manjunatha Swamy, drawing attention to the serious nature of his claims.

The former temple cleaner lodged a police complaint earlier this month, stating he had worked at the temple from 1995 until 2014. In his complaint, he recounted several incidents where he was allegedly forced to bury the remains of numerous girls and young women, some reported to be minors. He claimed to have remained in hiding since 2014, finally returning to speak out due to a burdened conscience.

The man, who has kept his identity concealed and appeared in public wearing black clothing and a mask, indicated that temple staff were responsible for these heinous acts. However, the temple administration has firmly rejected these allegations as unfounded and slanderous. He notably presented what he claimed to be a human skull as evidence of his accusations, although investigators asserted it did not originate from the alleged burial sites.

In response to the complaints, the state government formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to look into the matter. During their search, human remains including bone fragments and a skull were reportedly found at designated sites the man had identified. These remains are currently undergoing forensic analysis, although their origins remain unclear.

The gravity of the claims has embroiled the influential Heggade family, long-time custodians of the temple, in controversy. Veerendra Heggade, the chief administrator, has voiced support for the investigation and dismissed the claims as impossible, indicating hope for an expedited resolution. The situation has incited political tension, with officials from various parties exchanging criticisms regarding the legitimacy of the allegations and the motivations behind them.

Home Minister G Parameshwara asserted that the investigation would uphold impartiality, emphasizing the necessity for truth. As excavations continue and political debates escalate, the repercussions of this case will likely resonate well beyond Dharmasthala, challenging the intersection of faith, justice, and governance in contemporary India.
