In the latest development in North American defense collaboration, the Canadian government has confirmed that it is in discussions with the United States over its proposed "Golden Dome" missile defense system. This new security initiative is engineered to address an array of "next-generation" aerial threats, reflecting increasing concerns over advanced weaponry.

Prime Minister Mark Carney's office has stated that "active discussions" are underway with American officials regarding various security measures, particularly the possibility of Canada's participation in the Golden Dome program. Announced recently by President Donald Trump, the initiative comes with a preliminary budget allocation of $25 billion (£18.7 billion) aimed at establishing the necessary infrastructure.

While there is expressed interest from Canada, uncertainty remains regarding specifics of participation, including costs and operational roles. The ongoing dialogue about the Golden Dome occurs simultaneously with trade and diplomatic negotiations following Trump's controversial remarks about imposing tariffs on Canada and suggesting the country might be better off as part of the United States. Spokesperson Audrey Champoux stated, "Canadians gave the prime minister a strong mandate to negotiate a comprehensive new security and economic relationship with the United States." However, she also cautioned that concrete details regarding financial contributions from Canada remain unclear.

In comments earlier, Trump acknowledged Canada’s interest, affirming, "They want to have protection as well, so as usual, we help Canada." He emphasized the objective for the Golden Dome missile program to become operational before he leaves office, projecting the total cost to soar to $175 billion while expressing expectations for Canada to "pay their fair share.”
