A grenade explosion at a popular Grenoble bar injured a dozen people, raising concerns over a possible link to drug trafficking.
A grenade explosion at the Aksehir bar in Grenoble left twelve people injured on Wednesday night, as confirmed by local authorities. The attack occurred shortly after 8:00 PM local time, and among the injured, two are reported to be in critical condition. Authorities remain unclear about the attack's motive but hinted at a potential connection to drug trafficking or a personal vendetta.
Prosecutor Francois Touret-de-Courcey stated that eyewitnesses indicated the attacker might have also been armed with a Kalashnikov assault rifle. He reinforced that there was no immediate evidence to suggest that the attack had any ties to terrorism, labeling it an “act of extreme violence.”
With many patrons present during the incident, law enforcement swiftly responded by deploying approximately 80 firefighters and police to the scene, cordoning off the area for investigations. Deputy Mayor Chloe Pantel noted the bar, located in the Olympic Village neighborhood, was a social hub frequented by locals and visitors, especially for football matches.
Mayor Eric Piolle condemned the violent act, emphasizing the need for increased security and thanking emergency services for their prompt action. Enhanced police presence is expected to continue in the area as investigations remain ongoing.
