Two Women Gang-Raped Near UNESCO Site in India, Investigation Underway
A group attack on tourists in Hampi has left one man dead and two women, including an Israeli, traumatized, leading to arrests and heightened security concerns.
Police have reported a harrowing incident in southern India where two women, an Israeli tourist and an Indian homestay operator, were gang-raped and a man was killed near a popular UNESCO World Heritage site in Hampi. The attack occurred on a Thursday night, while the victims were stargazing with three male tourists near a lake, according to police superintendent Ram Arasiddi.
The assailants confronted the group and violently pushed the three men into the Tungabhadra River canal before committing the heinous acts against the women. Among the men, one American survived, while another man’s body was recovered the following Saturday. The police confirmed that five individuals were attacked near Sanapur, including two foreign nationals.
Authorities have arrested two suspects connected to this brutal crime, with the investigation still ongoing. Witnesses suggest the attackers followed the group after first approaching them under the pretense of needing directions. When the homestay operator claimed they didn’t have any money to spare, tensions escalated.
A case has been filed at the Gangavathi Rural Police Station, charging the criminals with extortion, robbery, gang rape, and attempted murder. The victims are currently receiving medical care at a local government hospital.
Hampi, located in the southern state of Karnataka, is renowned for its historical ruins and temples from the Vijayanagara Empire, gaining UNESCO World Heritage listing in 1986. In light of the attack, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah condemned the violence and ordered a prompt and thorough investigation, affirming that two suspects had already been apprehended.
This incident has revived concerns regarding the safety of women in India, following a rise in violence that sparked national outrage and protests last year after the brutal rape and murder of a junior doctor in Kolkata.
