China Enforces Portable Battery Ban on Flights Amid Safety Fears
New regulations emerge as global aviation authorities react to battery hazards
Travelers in China are facing unexpected challenges as an emergency ban on specific portable batteries takes effect at airports. The ban, initiated by China's aviation regulator, was announced with only two days' notice and aims to mitigate risks posed by these common devices, which have been associated with numerous recalls due to safety issues.
The Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) released a notification indicating that any portable batteries lacking a clear Chinese safety certification would be barred from flights. This ban follows an increase in incidents involving the combustion of portable batteries during flights, prompting airlines and global regulatory bodies to enhance scrutiny regarding their in-flight usage.
The abruptness of the ban has left many travelers bewildered, with complaints surfacing about having to dispose of their batteries before boarding. With portable batteries being integral to modern life, the sudden restriction is causing significant inconvenience.
This new policy comes on the heels of a major safety alert involving two prominent Chinese battery manufacturers that have recently issued recalls for millions of devices due to concerns with their lithium-ion cells. One key player, Anker, has made headlines by recalling over a million batteries in the U.S. alone, followed by similar actions in China.
In addition to Anker's recalls, another company, Romoss, has had to withdraw nearly half a million units from the market. The CAAC's warning emphasizes that these developments signify an escalating threat to the aviation industry's safety, leading to the suspension and revocation of certifications for several battery manufacturers.
As travelers navigate this sudden change, concerns remain regarding the impact these safety measures might have on the convenient use of portable batteries across the airline industry.
