Landmark Conviction: Photographer Found Guilty of Murdering Kenyan LGBT Activist Edwin Chiloba
A Kenyan court has convicted Jacktone Odhiambo for the tragic murder of LGBT activist Edwin Chiloba, highlighting ongoing issues of violence against LGBTQ individuals in the country.
In a landmark ruling, a Kenyan court has convicted photographer Jacktone Odhiambo for the murder of prominent LGBT activist Edwin Kiprotich Kipruto, widely known as Edwin Chiloba. Chiloba's lifeless body was unearthed from a metal box in early January 2023, after mysteriously disappearing days earlier. The Eldoret court, through its judge Reuben Nyakundi, concluded that the evidence presented, including DNA analysis, substantiated Odhiambo’s guilt, proving he had intentionally caused Chiloba’s death.
The heinous crime, which shocked the community and incited international outrage, saw Chiloba's remains discarded on a roadside. Initial investigations revealed he endured severe trauma, having been strangled and smothered. Disturbingly, clothing was found stuffed into his mouth, showcasing the brutality of the act. According to the judge, Odhiambo, who was reportedly a close friend of the deceased, demonstrated extreme malice and hatred. "You were close friends, and you should have protected his life," the judge stated while emphasizing the tragic nature of the crime against a young man with a promising future.
Despite Odhiambo's previous claims denying the charges, the prosecution brought forth compelling evidence from 23 witnesses detailing the events leading to Chiloba's death, clearly indicating the intentional nature of the murder. The National Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission hailed the conviction as a "significant step toward justice for Edwin and all LGBTQ residents of Kenya, Africa and beyond."
This significant event occurs within a broader context of societal resistance against LGBTQ rights in Kenya, where homosexuality remains criminalized, often leading to violence against individuals identifying as part of the community. As the country grapples with these societal norms, the conviction of Odhiambo is seen not just as justice for Chiloba, but as a pivotal moment in the fight for LGBTQ rights in Africa. Sentencing for Odhiambo is slated for December 16.
