Rising Tensions in Syria: New Government Demands Disarmament from Kurdish-Led Militia

As a new government forms in Syria following the fall of a dictatorial regime, tensions are escalating with demands for the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces to disarm for inclusion in a national military structure.

A significant shift is occurring in Syria as the newly established interim government urges the powerful Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), which previously received U.S. backing, to disarm and join a unified national military force. This call comes amid preparations for a caretaker administration aimed at steering the country towards democracy after the ousting of long-time dictator Bashar al-Assad in December.

The government is prioritizing the disarmament of armed groups as a prerequisite for their participation in a forthcoming national dialogue intended to forge a transitional administration for Syria. Hassan al-Daghim, leading the government committee overseeing the dialogue, emphasized that the inclusion of armed entities depends on their willingness to relinquish weapons and operate under the Ministry of Defense.

This demand could potentially marginalize the Kurdish-led SDF, which has maintained control of an autonomous region in northeastern Syria and has historically refused to disarm.
