The world mourns the loss of Sister Inah Canabarro Lucas, a Brazilian nun who recently passed away at the age of 116. Born on June 8, 1908, in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, Sister Inah’s life was deeply intertwined with her faith and her passion for football. Known for celebrating her birthdays with a cake shaped like the stadium of her favorite football team, Sport Club Internacional, she lived an avid life filled with joy and community spirit.
Sister Inah made headlines in 2018 when she received a blessing from Pope Francis. Her family reported her longevity was attributed to her unwavering faith, as she often stated, “God is the secret to life.” With her passing, the title of the oldest living person has shifted to 115-year-old Ethel Caterham from Surrey, England.
In her later years, Sister Inah resided in a home for the Teresian Sisters in Porto Alegre, where she adhered to a consistent daily routine of prayer, meals, and sleep. Despite losing some of her hearing and sight, she remained a vibrant presence, well-loved by her fellow nuns and supporters. Recognized for her good health for most of her life, Sister Inah had only one surgery, a cataract operation at the age of 106.
Sister Rita Fernandes Barbosa, a co-ordinator at her home, cherished Sister Inah's gratitude and good humor, noting her sociable nature. The local community and Sport Club Internacional extended their condolences, honoring her life distinguished by kindness, dedication, and an enduring love for football.
