Diver recounts harrowing rescue after Red Sea boat tragedy
Diver Khattab al-Faramawy shares the challenges of locating survivors trapped inside the capsized Sea Story, as families anxiously await news of their loved ones.
An Egyptian diver narrated the complexities of the search and rescue efforts following the capsizing of a tourist boat, the Sea Story, in the Red Sea. Khattab al-Faramawy explained that the divers had to navigate through the dark, submerged cabins of the boat using torchlight to locate trapped passengers and crew. "We dived 12m (40ft) underwater; the survivors were trapped inside the boat cabins," he recounted in a phone interview.
The vessel sank on Monday after being struck by a significant wave near Marsa Alam while carrying 44 people. On Tuesday, rescuers recovered four bodies and five survivors amidst the wreckage, with authorities yet to confirm the identities of the deceased. Reports suggest that two of the missing passengers are British nationals.
Al-Faramawy detailed the intense nature of the operation, revealing that rescuers had to pry open cabin doors to reach the passengers. He expressed his hopes for the safe return of those still missing, especially since two of the individuals rescued included his 23-year-old nephew, Youssef, a diving instructor.
Youssef's father, Hussam al-Faramawy, expressed overwhelming relief upon learning about his son’s survival. "I couldn’t tell his mother what happened to the boat; she would have died immediately," he shared, recounting the tense moments of waiting for news.
Witnesses reported that the Sea Story was mostly submerged, leaving just a small portion visible above water. The Egyptian navy is overseeing the ongoing rescue efforts, while military personnel have kept survivors away from media attention. Videos shared by local authorities showcased the emotional moments as survivors, including one on a stretcher, were warmly wrapped in blankets.
The 44-meter vessel had embarked on a five-day diving tour from Marsa Alam, a hub for diving enthusiasts. It reportedly capsized quickly, within five to seven minutes after encountering perilous conditions due to severe winds. The Egyptian Meteorological Authority had previously issued warnings about high waves, advising against maritime activities in the area.
Authorities stated that the Sea Story had obtained a valid safety certificate prior to the incident. Among the tourists onboard were individuals from around the world, including Belgium, the UK, China, and several European nations. Disappointing news arose with reports confirming that two Polish tourists and one Finnish national remain unaccounted for.
The UK Foreign Office has extended its support to affected British nationals and their families, while the Chinese embassy confirmed the well-being of two rescued citizens. The Red Sea, known for its attractive diving options and vibrant marine ecosystem, continues to draw tourists to the region amidst this profound tragedy.
