Suspect Arrested for Alleged Assassination Attempt on Presidential Candidate
Arrest marks a significant development in the case of a Colombian senator shot during a campaign event.
Elder José Arteaga Hernandez, identified as the alleged mastermind behind the attack, was detained by police as part of ongoing investigations into Uribe's assassination attempt. The senator, who is among the candidates for the upcoming 2026 presidential election, remains in critical condition as he recovers from his severe injuries.
Arteaga is accused of coordinating the shooting, hiring a 15-year-old gunman to execute the attack, and supplying the weapon used. This incident has already resulted in the arrest of four individuals, including the teenager, who has since pleaded not guilty to charges of attempted murder.
Colombian police chief Carlos Fernando Triana indicated that Arteaga has a lengthy criminal history and is being sought for serious charges that include "aggravated attempted homicide" and utilizing minors in criminal acts. Police have stated that Arteaga was spotted near the crime scene at the time of the attack.
Senator Uribe, who has been a staunch critic of the current left-wing administration led by President Gustavo Petro, announced his presidential candidacy late last year. Coming from a notable political lineage—his mother, journalist Diana Turbay, was a victim of kidnapping and murder by the infamous Medellin drug cartel—Uribe represents a voice for many critics of the present government.
The shooting spurred massive silent protests across Colombia, with tens of thousands of citizens joining to express their outrage and support for Uribe. As investigations continue, the case has underscored the ongoing violence and political tensions prevalent in the country.
