FAA Faces Temporary Outage of Primary Alert System for Pilots
Backup system activated as officials work on restoring primary service, possible flight delays anticipated.
On February 2, 2025, at 12:41 a.m. ET, Secretary Duffy announced via social media that the primary “Notice to Air Missions” (NOTAM) system was not operational, but reassured that the National Airspace System remains unaffected. The NOTAM system is essential for informing pilots about potential hazards such as runway closures, airspace restrictions, and navigational signal issues.
Duffy emphasized that the FAA is taking measures to fully restore the system and would be providing frequent updates on its restoration. However, he did caution that there may be residual flight delays on Sunday morning as a result of the outage. The national airspace system covers over 29 million square miles, incorporating both controlled and uncontrolled airspace over land and sea.
The FAA is currently in the midst of modernizing its NOTAM infrastructure, which has experienced disruptions in the past. A similar incident in January 2023 resulted in approximately 90 minutes of halted flight departures nationwide. This story continues to develop as officials work towards a resolution.
