Escalating Violence in Colombia: At Least Four Dead from Bomb and Gun Assaults
A surge of devastating attacks in southwestern Colombia has resulted in multiple casualties, signaling a crisis that demands urgent attention.
In a series of violent incidents across southwest Colombia, local media confirmed that at least four people have died, including two police officers. The attacks, characterized by car and motorcycle bombs, gunfire, and a suspected drone strike, targeted police stations, government buildings, and civilians in Cali, the country’s third-largest city. The recent spate of violence is believed to be linked to factions of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), with local media sources indicating a troubled security climate. Although the exact toll remains unclear, numerous individuals sustained injuries during the chaos. The Colombian Ministry of Defence reported 19 separate attacks in the area, including 12 in Cauca and seven in Valle del Cauca. Describing the violence as a "desperate reaction" from illegal armed groups in light of intensified military operations, the ministry underscored the severity of the situation. This wave of attacks follows a near-assassination attempt on presidential candidate Miguel Uribe Turbay in Bogota, raising alarm as the mayor of Cali likened the current environment to the city’s violent history in 1989, influenced heavily by drug cartels.
