Josip Dabro resigns amid backlash after footage of him shooting from a moving vehicle surfaces, raising concerns within the government.
Croatia is facing political turbulence as Deputy Prime Minister Josip Dabro has announced his resignation following the emergence of controversial footage. The video, which has stirred public outrage, depicts Dabro in the passenger seat of a car, merrily chatting and singing while shooting a firearm out of an open window. He represents the hard-right nationalist faction, the Homeland Movement.
Dabro defended his actions, stating that the footage is several years old and that he was using training bullets. However, his explanation did little to quell the criticism, with the government labeling his behavior as “inappropriate and irresponsible.” The resignation marks another tumultuous chapter for Croatia's coalition government, which was formed in May 2024.
Posting his resignation on Facebook, Dabro expressed that he did not wish to become a distraction for government operations, especially in light of increasing pressure and threats he claims to have faced regarding upcoming departmental reforms. His departure adds to a growing list of controversies within the current administration, which includes the recent sacking of Health Minister Vili Bros amid corruption allegations.
The political landscape is further complicated as Zoran Milanovic was re-elected president for a second term. He decisively won nearly 75% of the votes against his opponent, Dragan Primorac, who was endorsed by the ruling Croatian Democratic Union, led by Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic. Following Milanovic’s victory, Plenkovic remarked that the president offers little of substance to the electorate, reflecting the divisive nature of Croatian politics as the country navigates these evolving challenges.
