South Africa Moves to Appeal Acquittal of Nigerian Pastor Timothy Omotoso
South African prosecutors initiate an appeal following the acquittal of Timothy Omotoso, accused of raping young women from his congregation.
Timothy Omotoso, head of the Jesus Dominion International Church, was acquitted in April of 32 sexual assault charges against young women from his congregation in Port Elizabeth. The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) announced its intention to appeal the judgment, stating that Omotoso's physical presence is not required for the process to continue. He left South Africa shortly after being acquitted, having been captured on camera at OR Tambo International Airport wearing a hoodie and sunglasses.
Omotoso was initially arrested in 2017 when trying to flee the country. His trial marked a historic moment as South Africa's first high-profile rape case broadcast live. Among those accusing him is a woman who claims to have been raped by him at the age of 14. The NPA acknowledged that, following his acquittal, South Africa's legal framework did not bar Omotoso from departing but reiterated that should the appeal succeed, a request for his extradition would be pursued based on an existing treaty with Nigeria.
Additionally, Omotoso faces immigration issues, with the Department of Home Affairs suggesting that he may have been in the country illegally and could face a five-year entry ban. His church has a significant following, with branches in several countries including the UK, Nigeria, France, and Israel, reflecting the pastor's international reach despite the controversy surrounding him.
