Cyclone Chido Triggers Immigration Controversy in Mayotte

The aftermath of Cyclone Chido has reignited fierce debates over immigration policies and sentiments towards undocumented immigrants in Mayotte.

Following Cyclone Chido's devastating impact on Mayotte, tensions surrounding immigration have escalated, with local advocacy groups intensifying calls for the deportation of undocumented immigrants from Comoros.

The article text:

In the wake of Cyclone Chido, which struck the French island territory of Mayotte on December 14, devastating communities and claiming at least 39 lives, local attitudes towards undocumented immigrants have reached a boiling point. The cyclone notably laid waste to shantytowns primarily inhabited by migrants from the nearby Comoros islands, leading to significant unrest among Mayotte residents.

Safina Soula, a prominent activist advocating for the residents of Mayotte, viewed the cyclone's destruction as a potential opportunity to strengthen government actions against undocumented immigration. She referred to the cyclone as “a divine Wuambushu,” referencing an eviction initiative that began last year aimed at dismantling these informal settlements. Soula expressed strong support for prohibiting the reconstruction of these areas, stating that immediate action is essential.

As the dust settles after the cyclone, France's Ministry of the Interior revealed that 30% of Mayotte's population of approximately 320,000 consists of undocumented immigrants. This demographic has become a point of contention among the locals, many of whom have voiced concerns regarding crime rates and the depletion of resources in a territory that remains France's poorest region, with about 80% of residents living under the poverty line.

The complex relationship between the native Mahorais and the immigrants is further complicated by historical ties; both groups share a common Comorian ancestry. However, the dynamics shifted following a crucial referendum in 1974 when Mayotte chose to remain French while the rest of the Comoros archipelago sought independence.

Calls for stricter immigration enforcement have intensified as the community grapples with the aftermath of Cyclone Chido, illustrating the fragile socio-political landscape on the island. Residents are watching closely to see if the French government will heed their demands and intensify efforts to address the undocumented immigration crisis fueling ongoing resentment.
