Thai Families Await News of Hostages in Gaza
After 15 months of uncertainty, Thai families hope for the release of their loved ones held in Gaza, while grappling with fear and anxiety.
In the heart of Isaan, Thailand's northeast region, families are enduring an emotional wait as they cling to hope for the release of their loved ones held hostage in Gaza for the past 15 months. On January 30, 2025, five families prayed for good news, as the Thai foreign ministry announced the potential release of five Thai nationals.
“I can’t sleep at all,” exclaimed Wiwwaeo Sriaoun, the mother of Watchara Sriaoun, one of the hostages. “We are happy but also anxious.” This sentiment was shared among many families, who find themselves in a painful limbo as they await the lists of names due to be released on that Thursday, although neither Israel nor Hamas has confirmed the names of those set for release.
Watchara was among the 30,000 Thai workers who had found employment in Israel prior to the outbreak of hostilities that began with Hamas-led attacks on October 7, 2023, which claimed the lives of at least 39 Thai agricultural workers and resulted in the abduction of at least 31 Thais, according to official reports. The traumatic events of that day still hang heavily over these families whose hopes have been dashed before; during a cease-fire in November 2023, 23 Thai hostages were released.
“We are just praying,” said Vilas Thanna, father of another hostage, Pongsak Thanna, who was surrounded by family in Buriram. They anxiously gathered as they waited for news. “I am super duper happy and excited. I couldn’t sleep since last night.”
The situation of a sixth Thai hostage remains murky; while the Thai government claims he is alive, other sources indicate he may have died in captivity. Yet, despite the risks, many Thai workers continue working in Israeli fields, buoyed by the knowledge of their loved ones, even in the face of danger.
Reports of casualties among Thai laborers continue to emerge, highlighting the perilous environment faced by these workers. Just last October, several Thais lost their lives from rocket attacks and unexploded ordnance.
As families in Isaan remain hopeful, their plight underscores the heartbreaking impact of international conflict, leaving loved ones in a constant state of anxiety and uncertainty about the fate of those who hold their hearts.
