The Cost of Survival: Gaza’s Struggle for Food Amid Violence

As desperation grips Gaza, citizens risk their lives to obtain food, facing violence and conflict in pursuit of basic necessities, highlighting the dire humanitarian crisis.

In the midst of escalating violence in Gaza, civilians like Mohammed al-Qedra are compelled to risk their lives for food, facing gunfire and injury while attempting to access aid. With reports of over a thousand fatalities linked to food aid efforts, healthcare facilities are overwhelmed, as professionals encounter severe malnutrition and trauma. The ongoing blockade and military activities complicate the situation, exacerbating an already critical humanitarian crisis.

In a harrowing narrative that underscores the harsh realities faced by Gazans, Mohammed al-Qedra, a 33-year-old man recently shot while seeking food, describes the desperate plight of his community. "Hunger drives us there," he explains to a BBC journalist, recounting his injury sustained at a Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) aid distribution centre, overshadowed by violence. With hunger overwhelming safety concerns, al-Qedra reflects, "We know that we might get injured or killed at any time, yet we still go there to get a kilo of flour.”

His ordeal is shared by countless others; the UN reports that over 1,000 Palestinians have been killed during similar attempts to secure food aid in the last two months alone. The distribution centres, often located within Israeli military zones and protected by private security, have become sites of tragedy, with many fatalities occurring nearby. Amidst the dangers, al-Qedra remains determined, stating he will return for food after his recovery, as he provides for his family.

The UK-Med charity, which manages two field hospitals in southern Gaza, reports treating approximately 2,000 patients monthly, many suffering from gunshot wounds and other war-related injuries obtained while seeking basic aid. British paramedic Sam Sears described the patient influx as overwhelming, with incidences of shrapnel wounds and critical injuries flooding the emergency department.

Medical staff like Dr. Aseel Horabi, who has witnessed horrific instances of violence firsthand and has faced personal loss, emphasize the grim reality of the situation. With her husband injured while gathering aid, she stresses the dire conditions at the hospital, where hunger weighs heavy not only on patients but also on caregivers. "We are living in disastrous conditions," Dr. Horabi asserts, illustrating a system overwhelmed by need and suffering, further exacerbated by the continued military offensive.

As international organizations and human rights advocates decry Israel's blockade and its resultant humanitarian implications, the World Health Organization raises alarms regarding mass starvation in Gaza. With reports stating a significant portion of the population faces famine-like conditions, doctors and aid groups call for urgent action.

Despite Israel's insistence that it is not responsible for the famine, claiming it is engineered by Hamas, the lack of accessible aid is undeniable. The blockade imposed at the start of March and subsequent military actions have intensified food scarcity, with a quarter of Gaza's population on the brink of starvation. Amid ongoing political complexities, Palestinian families continue to navigate a world where securing food has become a perilous gamble for survival.
