In brief

The Philippine National Police announced that Elliot Eastman, an American residing on the island of Mindanao, is believed to have been killed shortly after being abducted in mid-October. According to police spokeswoman Jean Fajardo, testimony from one of the suspects in custody indicates that Eastman did not survive the abduction incident, occurring when he was forcibly taken from his home in Sibuco on October 17.

The police have arrested four individuals in connection with the crime, but four other suspects remain at large. Eastman, who had been living in the Philippines for several months following his relocation from Vermont, was reportedly shot twice—once in the leg and once in the stomach—before being taken away on a boat by men posing as police officers. Although his body has not been recovered, authorities believe the kidnappers discarded it at sea.Eastman chronicled his experiences living in the Philippines through social media, fostering a following with videos that depicted his daily life. In his online posts, he mentioned meeting a woman he described as the "love of my life" and expressed his intention to film his unique experiences as a foreign resident in Sibuco. His father-in-law was the first to report the kidnapping to local authorities, detailing how armed men entered Eastman’s residence and fled the scene with him. While incidents of abduction have decreased in recent years due to weakening militant factions, the U.S. continues to caution its citizens against traveling in certain regions of the Philippines where such risks persist. Military officials attribute the incidents to insurgent groups' ongoing activities in the southern areas of the country.
