Incident
On 30 June 2026, a roof collapsed at a private tuition centre in the Kahna suburb of Lahore, Pakistan, killing 14 children, most of whom were under ten years old, and injuring five more. Rescue 1122 received a call at 16:45 local time and completed the operation within an hour, recovering the bodies and providing medical assistance to survivors.
Cause and Witness Accounts
Witnesses report that the roof was in poor shape and that tiles were being repaired while students were present. Zaheer, 45, told AFP that heavy weight on the roof led to its sudden collapse, saying, "Suddenly the roof collapsed on top of quite a few children, they put a lot of weight on the roof and that’s why this has happened." Another resident noted uncertainty about where to begin condolence visits. The building’s structural integrity was already compromised before the incident.
Government Response and Investigation
Authorities have detained two individuals as part of the immediate investigation. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed condolences, stating he "prayed for the speedy recovery of the injured and directed the authorities to provide them with every possible medical assistance." Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif called the tragedy "heartbreaking" and vowed that every accountable person would face the full force of the law. The fate of the victims’ families is now a priority for the provincial and federal governments.
