In brief

The COP29 climate summit has witnessed a notable shift as countries rally to increase nuclear energy use to tackle climate change.

Over the years, nuclear energy has transitioned from a contentious topic at climate summits to a potential key player in global energy strategies. Historically, nuclear discussions faced considerable resistance, with many environmental groups vehemently opposing its inclusion in the climate dialogue. However, as global energy demands rise and the impacts of climate change become increasingly dire, the narrative around nuclear power is shifting dramatically. At the COP29 conference held in Baku, Azerbaijan, notable advancements in this area were showcased. In attendance were leaders from countries that previously avoided nuclear power discussions. The tides began changing significantly at last year’s climate conference in the UAE when 22 nations committed to tripling the world’s nuclear capacity by 2050 – a pledge that gained six new signatories this year.Dr. Sama Bilbao y Leon, head of the World Nuclear Association and an attendee since 1999, remarked on the positive shift. She emphasized, “There’s a collective realization that nuclear power may be crucial in resolving our climate crisis.” This discussion includes both long-time nuclear nations like France, Canada, and South Korea, as well as newer participants from regions like Africa and Asia, including Kenya and Nigeria, which are exploring nuclear energy as a viable option. The growing acceptance of nuclear power aligns with increasing concerns over greenhouse gas emissions and energy security. As nations face mounting pressures to decarbonize their energy sectors, many see nuclear energy—capable of providing stable and significant power without harmful emissions—as an essential part of the solution. With these significant commitments made at COP29, it’s evident that nuclear power has transformed from being a pariah in climate talks to an integral potential ally in combatting climate change and meeting the world’s energy demands.
