In brief

UN Secretary‑General Antonio Guterres condemned the rise in drone attacks in Sudan that have killed hundreds of civilians, including women and children, and destroyed crucial health facilities. He urged all parties to spare civilians and critical infrastructure and to engage in good‑faith mediation. The UN stands ready to support a sustainable political resolution reflecting the aspirations of the Sudanese people.

On Saturday, the United Nations Secretary‑General Antonio Guterres condemned the escalating drone attacks in Sudan that have killed hundreds of civilians, including women and children, and inflicted damage on critical infrastructure. The statement, released by the UN on November 1, 2026, was issued in the wake of ongoing sandeast conflict and the growing use of unmanned aerial vehicles across the country, including the disputed Abyei region.

In the statement, Guterres called the attacks a violation of international humanitarian law and urged all parties involved in the Sudanese conflict to “spare the civilian population and critical infrastructure” and to agree “without delay” to a cessation of hostilities as a first step toward ending the violence.

Stephane Dujarric, the secretary‑general’s spokesperson, said that the UN was appalled by “all the attacks directed against civilians and critical infrastructure, including health facilities.” The secretary‑general’s appeal to the parties is part of a broader push for good‑faith mediation efforts to resolve the conflict.

“The Secretary‑General calls on the parties to spare the civilian population and critical infrastructure and agree without delay to a cessation of hostilities as a first step toward ending this devastating conflict,” the statement said.

The United Nations reiterated that it is ready to support any efforts that advance a sustainable political resolution reflecting the aspirations of the Sudanese people. The call comes as the international community watches the rapid escalation of drone use in the region, which poses a significant risk to civilian life and the stability of essential services. Guterres继续呼吁各方通过良好信任的调停努力实现和平。”
