In these early days of 2025, we find ourselves surrounded by a blank canvas of dates and opportunities, brimming with potential yet tinged with uncertainty. While some anticipate this year with trepidation, weighed down by the challenges they foresee, others view it as an exhilarating chapter cloaked in possibility. “This year is going to be a tough ride for me,” a friend remarked, listing her ambitious plans, which, to me, sounded full of promise—a glimpse into the unfolding chapters of another's journey.The same days lie in wait for each of us, but how do we intend to fill them? How do we plan to approach our daily experiences? Recently, I encountered “The Clock,” an installation by Christian Marclay at MoMA. This 24-hour cinematic experience stitches together countless film snippets featuring timepieces, creating a captivating representation of time itself. Mirrored to real-world hours, every moment of the film corresponds exactly with the viewer's experience, transforming it into a fascinating clock.During a special overnight viewing on the winter solstice, I found myself rushing, anxious about my tardiness. Yet, as I paused, I realized the fluidity of the event; others would circulate in and out, embracing their personal timelines. It offered a fresh perspective of time—unbound by traditional linearity, pulsating endlessly, irrespective of someone's presence.As hours drifted by, I sat absorbed in the unfolding scenes, pondering whether I was experiencing time "correctly." Should my focus be on the individual stories in the film, or the marks of time - 11:22, 11:23? In trying to catch a fleeting snapshot from a movie, might I miss noticing time's subtle passage? The contemplation invoked by “The Clock” urges us to take stock of how we view time. We navigate our lives akin to artists crafting narratives, seeking significance in each moment. What story will we compose from the days ahead? Will 2025 become a tale of triumphs or tribulations? Ultimately, who wields the brush to color this year’s narrative?
