Two Palestinian men have told the BBC about their experiences of beatings and sexual abuse while detained in Israeli prisons. These claims come amid a broader context of allegations regarding the treatment of Palestinian detainees in Israeli custody, intensified after the Hamas attacks on October 7, 2023.
The United Nations Committee Against Torture expressed deep concern over reports indicating a policy of widespread torture and ill-treatment of Palestinian detainees. Various rights organizations have documented what they describe as systematic abuse within the prison system.
Despite these claims, the Israeli government has denied all allegations, asserting that such actions do not occur under their jurisdiction. However, many rights advocates argue that the backlash against the Hamas-led violence has fostered a culture of impunity among prison officials.
Sami al-Saei, a 46-year-old former journalist, recounted his time in Megiddo prison from Jan 2024, where he was detained without charge for 16 months. Al-Saei alleges that he was sexually abused by prison guards, who laughed and taunted him during the assault.
Another detainee, under the pseudonym Ahmed, detailed being stripped naked, beaten, and sexually humiliated involving a prison dog. Ahmed, found guilty of incitement to terrorism for social media posts supporting Hamas attacks, reported the trauma he experienced during his time in custody.
The treatment of Palestinians in Israeli prisons remains a contentious issue, with calls for investigations often met with resistance. Activists point to recent instances of abuse documented by military officials, while the Israeli military claims they maintain the rights and safety of all inmates.
The unfolding situation raises critical questions about human rights and the experiences of detainees in conflict zones. As tensions remain high, these allegations may serve as focal points for advocates pushing for accountability.
