At least two people have been confirmed dead following an explosion at a military barracks in Viacha, 30 km from La Paz, and at least 81 others were injured.
The blast, reported around 14:30 local time (18:30 GMT) on Friday, was caused by the detonation of pyrotechnic material stored by an artillery regiment. Police stated that dozens of homes in the area were damaged, and emergency workers were clearing rubble under the threat of a possible secondary explosion.
Health official Rita Nebraska estimated the death toll to be between 10 and 15, while also noting that seven individuals remain missing. She warned residents to keep a minimum distance of 150 m from the base to avoid further damage.
President Rodrigo Paz expressed his deepest solidarity with the bereaved families and pledged a “thorough, technical and transparent investigation” into the incident. He also announced a three‑day period of mourning in Viacha.
Police spokesman Roger Roca confirmed that fireworks had indeed been stored at the barracks, saying the cause of the blast remains under investigation. AFP reports that the authorities will continue to monitor the site for hazards.
The incident highlights the growing concerns over storage practices of pyrotechnic devices in military facilities. Local authorities and families are awaiting detailed findings from the investigative commission.
