A motorist in western North Carolina escaped injury when a cat unexpectedly fell onto her windshield while driving. The strange event occurred on U.S. Route 74 near Bryson City, where the driver claimed a bald eagle was responsible.
In her 911 call, the driver expressed disbelief as she shared, You may not believe me, but I just had a bald eagle drop a cat through my windshield. She reported that the impact shattered her windshield, leaving her both astonished and terrified.
The dispatcher responded warmly, assuring her that she believed the unbelievable story, even sharing a laugh about the situation. Another eyewitness confirmed seeing the cat drop, insisting it was indeed a strange sight.
While it remains unclear whether the eagle lost its grip on the feline or simply discarded it, wildlife experts provide insight into the behavior of bald eagles. Kendrick Weeks, from the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission, noted that eagles will occasionally scavenge roadkill. Although they can carry animals up to the size of a cat, it can be challenging to capture a live cat. Factors such as a lack of grip, harassment from other birds, or the prey's weight can lead eagles to drop their catch.
Bald eagles are native to North Carolina, with their numbers on the rise, reaching over 200 nesting pairs in the area. These majestic birds possess impressive wingspans and are a common sight in the region's wildlife, making incidents like this peculiar yet memorable.
