In a heartbreaking incident, 17-year-old Ben Austin tragically died after being hit by a cricket ball during a training session in Ferntree Gully, Melbourne. The accident occurred while Ben was practicing with a handheld ball launcher; although he was wearing a helmet, he did not have a neck guard in place.
Emergency services were called to the scene around 5 PM local time. Despite being rushed to the hospital in critical condition and placed on life support, Ben passed away two days later.
His father, Jace Austin, voiced the family's devastation, describing Ben as their beautiful Ben and expressing gratitude for the support received from the local community. Ben was remembered as a dedicated cricketer who cherished time spent with friends on the field.
Cricket Victoria's CEO, Nick Cummins, reflected on the tragedy, recalling a similar accident that took the life of cricketer Phillip Hughes nearly a decade ago, which led to discussions about improving safety standards in cricket.
Austin's passing has not only saddened his family but also shaken the broader cricket community, with fellow players and clubs paying their respects and honoring his memory through various tributes.
In his honor, teams and supporters have been encouraged to put your bats out for Benny, reminiscent of gestures made during the mourning of Hughes. Ben's legacy as a promising athlete will resonate strongly within Melbourne's sporting circles.
