In brief

The annual American Crossword Puzzle Tournament fosters community spirit among participants, showcasing the joy of connecting over a shared love for wordplay.

Last Friday, a vibrant gathering took place in the lobby of a Marriott in downtown Stamford, Conn., as attendees of the 47th American Crossword Puzzle Tournament celebrated their love for word games. Organized by The Times's puzzle editor Will Shortz, the event was a joyous reunion for veteran puzzlers and an exciting opportunity for newcomers. First-time participants nervously eyed experienced puzzlers, hoping for a glimpse of famous constructors. Many engaged in discussions or began tackling the abundant crosswords laid out on welcome tables, the atmosphere buzzing with energy.Though I considered myself a crossword enthusiast, I quickly learned at the tournament just how much of an amateur I was. I met competitors who could solve a Saturday puzzle in under three minutes and fans with an impressive memory of crossword constructors' careers. A standout participant even donned a Phantom of the Opera costume, complete with a grid-patterned cape and a giant pencil rose. Throughout the wine-and-cheese reception, I soaked in the passion of puzzle creators as they described the elation of constructing a blueprint that ultimately comes together seamlessly. During Saturday's timed puzzle sessions, I managed to complete five out of six puzzles in the allocated time, a victory that made me feel slightly less out of place amongst nearly 1,000 dedicated participants. However, what mattered more than individual achievements was the sense of community shaped by our common interest in puzzles. In the elevator after solving, strangers became friends as they shared frustrations over tricky clues, sparking conversations that lingered even as they headed to their floors. This kind of quick bonding is rarely possible in everyday life, where interactions often consist of polite nods and distractions from smartphones. At an enthusiasts’ convention, the desire to connect is invigorated. Each participant had spent countless hours engaged with puzzles alone, making this weekend their precious opportunity to engage with like-minded individuals. As I headed home, I visited an old college friend, appreciating the comfort of rekindled familiarity amidst the excitement of new connections. While I cherished the weekend's invigorating experiences with strangers, I realized the balance of excitement and exhaustion that comes from building new relationships. If only my friend were a crossword lover too, bridging our established relationship with a shared obsession would further enrich our connection. However, it seemed unlikely, as he had shown little interest in the world of puzzles.
