Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has been named game of the year in a record-breaking haul at this year's Game Awards.

The French-developed role-playing game (RPG) cleaned up in nine of the 10 categories it was up for, including best narrative, best music, and best performance.

It fended off competition from titles such as Death Stranding 2, Nintendo's Donkey Kong Bananza, indie games like Hollow Knight: Silksong and Hades 2, and Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2.

During the ceremony in Los Angeles, players also got their first glimpses of new Tomb Raider games, a sequel to Control, and a fresh Star Wars RPG.

Set in a universe controlled by a supernatural being known as The Paintress, Clair Obscur follows a group of adventurers on a quest to shatter her grip on the world. The game's unique blend of emotional storytelling and classic turn-based gameplay has resonated widely with players.

Director Guillaume Broche, accepting the Game of the Year award, acknowledged the journey of his team from Ubisoft to Sandfall Interactive, emphasizing the importance of community support and educational resources available for aspiring game developers.

The night culminated in a celebration of the year’s best games, with Clair Obscur not just claiming the spotlight as the most-nominated title with 12 nods but also taking home multiple wins in categories such as best role-playing game, best independent game, and best debut indie game.

While Clair Obscur missed out on awards for Best Audio Design and the Player's Voice category, it was an overwhelmingly successful night for the game and its team, highlighting the ever-growing potential of indie games in the gaming landscape.

The Game Awards continue to balance honoring achievements in gaming with showcasing upcoming titles, leaving fans eagerly anticipating what's next in the gaming universe.
