In brief

A new survey highlights significant economic concerns among Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders, with nearly half prioritizing government action on rising living costs and inflation. Health care affordability is also a major concern, with 44% advocating for healthcare reform. As living expenses soar, these communities express a diminishing confidence in the government’s ability to address their needs.

Economic anxiety has hit Asian Americans, Pacific Islanders, and Native Hawaiians particularly hard, according to a recent poll conducted by AAPI Data and the Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research. With the cost of living rising sharply, nearly 50% of respondents from these communities expressed a desire for the government to prioritize tackling inflation and affordability, highlighting their specific concerns amidst a general economic malaise affecting the broader populace.

In comparison, about one-third of the general U.S. population labeled inflation as a concerning issue, indicating that AAPI adults feel a disproportionate impact from these economic challenges.

The survey findings show that awareness of financial hurdles has increased significantly within AAPI communities. In comparison to last year, support for government intervention to mitigate costs has surged from approximately 40% to nearly 50%. This uptick in concern mirrors the experiences of many families adjusting to financial strains brought on by high living costs and economic instability.

Concerns about health care expenses were prevalent as well, with 44% of AAPI adults emphasizing the importance of health care reform. This reflects a nationwide resurgence in awareness regarding health care issues after recent budget cuts were imposed. Many adults expressed frustration with the increasing costs associated with medical care, prompting some to consider alternatives such as medical tourism.

Personal accounts from individuals highlight how economic anxiety influences future planning, especially in high-cost areas like California and New York. For example, 56-year-old Jayakumar Natarajan from the San Francisco Bay Area is reconsidering his retirement plans due to rising prices. Similarly, young families like Kevin Tu and his wife are navigating their first child’s arrival amidst a challenging financial landscape.

Addtionally, dissatisfaction with government responses and policies has compounded these economic worries. The survey shows that confidence among AAPI adults in the government's ability to implement meaningful changes has dropped, with 7 in 10 expressing low faith that progress will occur on pressing issues.

These findings signal a pivotal moment for policymakers, as addressing the specific needs and concerns of AAPI communities may be crucial in navigating the economic landscape of the coming years.
