WASHINGTON (AP) — The Justice Department is investigating whether leaders in the Black Lives Matter movement misled donors who contributed tens of millions of dollars during the racial justice protests that erupted in 2020, according to multiple sources familiar with the inquiry.
In recent weeks, federal law enforcement officials have issued subpoenas and at least one search warrant targeting the Black Lives Matter Global Network Foundation, Inc., alongside other organizations linked to the movement. These actions signal a renewed scrutiny from authorities, amid claims of inadequate transparency in how the organization has handled its substantial influx of donations.
The investigation, which reportedly began during the Biden administration, has garnered renewed focus under the current administration, raising concerns among civil rights advocates about potential political motivations behind the probe.
The BLM Foundation has publicly stated that it received more than $90 million following the murder of George Floyd, with many calling for clearer disclosures regarding its financial decisions. Critics have pointed to a lack of transparency, especially after the organization purchased a multi-million dollar property in Los Angeles, prompting inquiries about the allocation of donor funds.
The organization has consistently denied any wrongdoing, asserting its commitment to accountability. However, the ongoing investigation has led to intensified discussions around the financial management of large non-profits associated with social movements.
As the investigation unfolds, the response from the Black Lives Matter movement and other similar organizations may shape the future of activist funding and public trust in social justice initiatives.
