Ebola Death in Kenya Marks First Fatality in the Country

Kenya has confirmed its first Ebola death after a Kenyan national who had been living in the Democratic Republic of Congo for the past seven years arrived in Nairobi on a Saturday.

Health Minister Aden Duale confirmed that the patient, who fell ill in late August, was treated in several hospitals in the DRC before being transferred by a relative to a Nairobi hospital. He died a few days after arrival, and tests conducted by the Ministry’s laboratory confirmed infection with the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola virus.

DRC has already recorded more than 4,000 Ebola‑related deaths this year, making the current outbreak the second deadliest on record. The Kenyan government has announced that all incoming travelers will undergo enhanced screening and that local health facilities are being prepared for possible cases.

Public health officials urge community vigilance, particularly in rural areas where the virus may spread more rapidly. Residents and travelers are advised to report symptoms such as fever, vomiting or bleeding, and to seek immediate medical attention.
