Manslaughter charges laid over deadly Hong Kong fire

Hong Kong authorities have charged two companies and seven people in connection with the November 2025 fire at the Wang Fuk Court housing complex that killed 168 residents.
They face 25 charges, including manslaughter, conspiracy to defraud, attempts to pervert the course of justice and tax evasion.
The investigation identified key failures: fire alarms were deactivated in seven of the eight blocks; windows were boarded with flammable foam; construction workers allegedly left lit cigarette butts on the site.
Previous arrests include two directors of Will Power Architects and 23 individuals such as contractors and owners’ corporation members. Police say 35 people have been detained on manslaughter and fraud allegations.
The anti‑graft watchdog and police have yet to disclose all names, leaving many questions about accountability and regulation.
Following the tragedy, authorities in Hong Kong and Beijing warned the media against "false information" and urged editors to avoid "seditious" content. Beijing’s security arm arrested columnist Wong Kwok‑ngon for publishing articles that were deemed provocative.
