Marius Borg Høiby to Hear Verdict on Monday

Oslo District Court’s three judges will deliver the final verdict on Monday. The 29‑year‑old son of Crown Princess Mette‑Marit will receive his sentence via a video‑link, owing to undisclosed health reasons.

The case contains 40 charges, four of which are alleged rapes. Prosecutors seek a jail term of seven years and seven months, while his defence lawyers aim for eighteen months. Høiby himself admits to drug trafficking, driving violations and a breach of a restraining order, but denies the rape allegations.

He has been held in custody since the start of February. Police arrested him shortly before the trial began on suspicion of assault and violating a restraining order involving an ex‑girlfriend. Repeated requests for his release have been denied by the courts.

Crown Princess Mette‑Marit’s health has deteriorated sharply; she has been placed on a lung‑transplant list and has visited Høiby in the prison. The public debate around the royal family was intensified earlier this year by revelations of her friendship with the disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein.

The prosecution’s allegations claim the rapes took place while the victims were incapacitated after consensual sex, with one case involving intercourse. One woman, known in Oslo as the “Frogner woman,” is the focal point of several charges. The court has balanced anonymity for most victims against the identified ex‑situation that allowed the victim’s photo to appear in the media.

The verdict will not only decide Høiby’s sentence but also bring closure to a saga that began with his arrest in August 2024. Yet the controversy over the monarchy’s integrity remains unresolved, with Crown Prince Haakon stepping back from public duties to focus on his wife’s severe illness.

While the verdict resolves the criminal case, the wider questions about the future of Norway’s royal house – a potential crisis of trust – are still open for debate.
