NYT Executive Fatally Shot in California, Suspects Detained

Police in Dublin, California, announced that Jonathan McKinsey, 40, director of engineering for games at the New York Times, was found dead after a violent shooting in a local car‑park. The victim had multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced fatal at the scene.

The arrested parties are Shouyong Zhang and Shili Chen, both 77, and are his wife’s parents. They face first‑degree murder, felony conspiracy, wilful discharge of a firearm with gross negligence and child endangerment charges. No lawyer has been confirmed for the couple, who are scheduled to appear before a judge on Wednesday.

Witnesses reported hearing several shots and seeing McKinsey collapse, with his head and chest covered in blood. An ex‑student of his described the scene as chaotic and described the suspect couple as heading away from the crime scene shortly after the incident.

The New York Times confirmed McKinsey’s death in an internal memo and is cooperating with law enforcement. The department has not yet released a motive; investigations remain ongoing.

The suspects are being held at Santa Rita jail pending further legal proceedings. The case highlights concerns over gun violence in the Bay Area and raises questions about gun safety among the elderly population.
