US lawmakers have released more than 20,000 pages of documents from the estate of the disgraced financier and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, including some that mention President Donald Trump.
On Wednesday, Democrats on the House Oversight Committee published three email exchanges involving Epstein, who died in 2019, and his long-time associate Ghislaine Maxwell, who is serving a 20-year prison sentence for sex trafficking. The emails included correspondence between Epstein and author Michael Wolff, known for his writings about Trump.
Following the release, House Republicans issued a counterpart of documents, asserting that the Democrats were attempting to manipulate the narrative against Trump.
Historically, Trump and Epstein were friends until a public fallout in the early 2000s, prior to Epstein's arrests, with Trump denying any misconduct related to Epstein.
Amongst the released content is an email from Epstein to Maxwell in 2011, wherein he notes, I want you to realize that that dog that hasn't barked is Trump.. [VICTIM] spent hours at my house with him. This email mentions an individual, later identified as Virginia Giuffre, who previously accused Epstein of wrongdoing. The White House confirmed Giuffre's claim that Trump did not partake in any wrongdoing.
In another exchange with Wolff, Epstein sought strategic counsel regarding media inquiries about his ties to Trump, underscoring his long-held connections to the former president. Wolff suggested that Epstein could gain leverage by revealing how it could be politically beneficial for him should Trump deny their relationship.
The White House has condemned the document release, framing it as a political tactic aimed at damaging Trump's reputation. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stated that Trump had distanced himself from Epstein years ago, emphasizing that the emails do not implicate the president in any wrongdoing.
The controversy continues to unfold as the public and media await further insights from these revelations and the implications they may have for Trump amidst the investigations surrounding Epstein.
